The park is tucked away in a residential area, and the entire park is roughly the size of a typical suburban house lot, with just 60 or so feet of lakeshore where there is a grassy beach area. Although it is a Seattle city park, Howell Park is not at all well known, and its location is so inconspicuous that anyone not specifically looking for it would be very unlikely to stumble upon it by accident.

Pretty much everyone cruises slowly down Alki Avenue past the beach, showing off a cool ride—or just looking for parking.
Summer provides the best weather for lake swimming with days stretching into spring and fall. Even if the water is too cold for swimming, these beaches provide the perfect space for suntanning on clear days. The gay area is on the north side of the beach, past the public restrooms. The beach has become less gay over the years and is more family oriented on the southside, but still draws a big crowd on hot summer days.

On Saturday, Seattle's most robust naked celebration takes place. Fremont will be a madhouse as the annual Solstice Parade revels in all that God or whomever your preferred higher power is gave us. The festival has come to be one of North Seattle's defining traditions, showcasing everything from Seattle's environmentalism to our liberal side with a strong anti-GOP undercurrent in many naked bikers' paint or signs to, well, our enjoyment of flaunting the rules and not wearing full pants, rain or shine.
