Although my focus is going to be on unusually colored squirrels, lets start by taking a look at some normally colored ones. I believe that these squirrels look gray because their fur includes a random mixture of black and white hairs. There are brown hairs, too, but the amount of brown varies greatly among individuals.
Squirrel and chipmunk are types of rodents that belong to the squirrel family. There are 25 species of chipmunk. All chipmunks are native to North America, except Siberian chipmunk which originates from Asia.
Curiosity defines the squirrels of Rocky Mountain National Park. They are brave yet skittish at the same time. There are 10 species of squirrels in the park.

The red squirrel is a very solitary little creature. In fact, each red squirrel takes it upon him or herself to defend a territory that ranges in between two acres and five acres. Not only are they defending the territory from other species of squirrels, namely grey squirrelsthey are also defending from other red squirrels.
More than 20 species of tree, flying, and ground squirrels can be found throughout Canada. The different types of squirrels cause their own specific sets of issues. For instance, tree squirrels cause the most trouble on suburban and urban residential properties, while ground squirrels are nuisances in rural areas, gardens, and on farms.
Many people are not aware that the grey and black squirrels are in fact the exact same species of animal. The only difference is a genetic defect in black squirrels. The animal has hormones in its pigment gene that regulate the development of the different colours as the animal grows.
Ground squirrelany of 62 species of long-bodied terrestrial rodents that are active during the day and have short legs, strong claws, small rounded ears, and a short or moderately long tail. Colour varies widely among species from gray, tawny, or pale brown to olive, reddish, or very dark brown. A few species are solid-coloured, but most exhibit characteristic patterns such as dappling, lines of spots, white to brownish black stripes, bright reddish brown cheeks, or stripes combined with a yellowish red mantle over the head and shoulders.
Members of the Sciuridae family, commonly referred to as squirrels, are rodents. Squirrels make up a significant portion of that, and certainly are the most diverse family of mammals. Squirrels are easily identified by their long bushy tails, pointed ears and cheek pouches used for temporary food storage.
